I have a lot of customers that are confounded as to how integrate outdoor living into their smaller spaces. While it can be a challenge, smaller spaces do not have to be limiting, or boring:) Take a look at this case study below.I just completed this design and was excited to share it with you:
This homeowner had a small backyard dominated by 3' height concrete block retaining wall and a slope up to the neighbor's yard:( How would like to walk out of your lovely home and be greeted by that? They did have an existing stamped concrete patio (that was small) and a great cedar pergola (that was awesome) to work with. The owner’s also wanted to reclaim their large side yard, which appeared to be part of the neighbor's property, but was not. A small screened porch bordered the side yard.
The design I created incorporated a 3' retaining wall to carve out a space in the side yard to put a large paver patio, and a custom fireplace with woodboxes flanking the fire feature. The wall continued on each side, serving as a both a retaining wall to the back and side yards, as well as, a foundation for the wood boxes. The pergola was great and needed to remain. The existing stamped concrete patio was to be removed and a new larger paver patio at the pergola to be installed. A connecting walkway and a small sitting area across from the screened porch was to be created with a seatwall. An optional recirculating fountain could serve as a focal point in that area if the homeowner desired.
New, lush plantings were also added: Chindo Viburnum, Chinese Snowball Viburnum, Encore Azaleas, Indian Hawthorne, Cephalotaxus, Creeping Jenny, Hosta, Autumn and Holly Ferns and a specimen 'Coral Bark' Japanese Maple across from the breakfast nook. The pavers I am proposing to uare Belgard Lafitt Rustic Slab pavers. The fireplace, seatwall and retaining walls are to be masonry with cultured stone veneer to match the existing home.
What a place to relax- I would never leave this spot!
